A writing prompt is a short text, four sentences or less, often less, which is used as the basis for a short story. Writing prompts are popular on Reddit, and several have become published books. Stories based on writing prompts loosely adhere to the prompt, and several stories can be submitted for the same prompt.

A forum where a prompt is submitted can generate many new stories, some short, others several chapters long. It encourages new writers to dive into writing and play with new ideas.

Prompts themselves can be a novel idea, but not one the person who thought of it can create a story from. Sharing an idea as a prompt let's others turn it into a fleshed out story.

I have an idea for a rather lengthy story. I sooo want to write it (or at least co-write). But, time and energy are not permitting. Problem is that it would be hard to summarize in just a few short sentences.
