That can be substantial on a monthly basis because, in reality, it's woman support while she raises the child. During the 18-year time period while the child grows up (including, perhaps, another 4 years of college), it adds up to a LOT of money.
You haven't mentioned whether obligatory child support is the case where you live, but it's something to keep in mind when your wife encourages you (inexplicably) to impregnate a woman other than her.

So today another corner was turned. Wife and I met the couple I mentioned above. It turned out awesome.
